As the sun blazed down Zoe Soldatenko shone bright in a 15 minute spell, claiming a perfect hat trick as Capalaba Bulldogs beat Eastern Suburbs 3-1 in a pre-season friendly.

The Bulldogs showed their class with Irene Villatoro’s lightning pace allowing Soldatenko to head home untroubled. Easts were spurred on to an immediate reply with Hayley Grosse on the end of a six-pass move to coolly slot home.

Another fluent counter enabled Soldatenko time and space in the box to place a precision pass beyond the Easts keeper Regina Fuentes.

While the heat was still on the wind was truly out of East’s sails as the Bulldogs number 12 lobbed Fuentes confidently to secure her triple, and victory for Capalaba.

Although the pressure of competitive football is still a month away, Division Two’s Capalaba Bulldogs took on new Division Three team Eastern Suburbs in this pre-season friendly. Easts, undefeated in two seasons bar last year’s Grand Final, wanted to test themselves against the Bulldogs’ mettle.

In near 40˚C heat this game was about getting back to the business of playing competitive football. The rust showed as the first quarter bore only glimpses of quality from these well-oiled teams.

The Bulldogs were lively as the energetic Villatoro produced several mazy runs towards goal, but the attacks soon dried up and Fuentes was untroubled by a series of pot shots.

The second quarter showed promise as Easts repeatedly attacked down the right with Melissa Wilson and Elaine Darmody combining well to put the Bulldogs under pressure. Late in the quarter Wilson again foraged forward, with only a brave headed clearance foiling a whipped cross from entering the box.

Wilson took the resultant corner and it was perfectly weighted for Sarah Dobson to volley powerfully from the edge of the area forcing the keeper to dive high to her left as the ball whistled past the upright.

Villatoro and Soldatenko kept up the Bulldogs attacking threat but Jess Donsky had other ideas. The Easts fullback contained them with a series of well timed tackles, which kept the Doggies on the leash.

The half-time break arrived giving both teams respite from the burning sun but it did nothing to cool the ambition.

With three minutes of the third quarter gone Villatoro and Soldatenko combined yet again with Villatoro raiding down the left to deliver a pinpoint cross for Soldatenko to head powerfully into the net past a stunned Fuentes. This lit the fuse for an explosive burst of action as Easts hit back immediately with a slick passing move from left to right with Grosse keeping a cool head to beat Suzannah Boulter in the Capalaba goal.

The match was heating up to a fine contest as both sides charged forward looking to take the lead. But it was Capalaba reaping rewards of slick counter attacking football through the impressive Soldatenko with an accurate left foot shot in to the net.

The Bulldogs were now in control and their superiority showed as Easts were chasing the lengthening shadows of their opponents. This space allowed Soldatenko to complete her perfect hat trick with a confident right foot lob over the indecisive Fuentes.

The rush of endeavour was now over and the final quarter idled out with neither side having any clearcut chances.
